Boston, MA is getting an extra dose of winter this year to make up for last year's unseasonably light winter. The set above reminded me a bit of the cherry blossoms of spring (here) with white, bud-like formations set against a blue backdrop, except this time around they are teensy ice-formations from our recent record snowfall + freeze. As beautiful as the trees are decorated with garlands of ice, I think I could use a bit of springtime right about now.

I am no longer consistently taking photographs, but occasionally I will run and snatch my camera if something is begging to be shot. The contrast of my dinner post-roast on the old pan caught my eye. I love the yellow cast of the fluorescent stove light combined with the striking, bright veggies.

April Fools! This was taken late last fall. Okay, that wasn't so very tricky and bordered on lame. :) But who cares, Happy April people! To the inevitable days bearing gifts of Southern rain I say this: "I've got my boots on. Get on with your rain puddles, I'm ready to play!"

A self-portrait

If you could have your portrait taken by any photographer (let's say living persons for reality sake), who would it be? Being assigned to execute a self-portrait in the style of the answer to the previous question, Rodney Smith is my man of choice. Photographer, I mean. His extremely precise compositions, deeply rich, soft colors, and quirky poses cause me to stare in awe, much like when I stood before a Monet creation for the first time. I'm not exaggerating. Rodney's work is half-past incredible. Ethereal, classic and unique are three words to describe his original beauties.

Once-upon-time-ago, after receiving the assignment and before creating the photograph above, I emailed him. Incredibly, two months later, said email completely forgotten, he responded.

That was a great day.

So the above image is in homage to Rodney Smith. Thank you for your brilliance, Mr. Smith, and for continuing to inspire!

This photograph reminds me of Alice from Disney's version of Alice in Wonderland.

A golden afternoon.

Sidenote: The fact that Tim Burton's new rendition of Alice in Wonderland comes to theatre's on March.05.2010, makes my creative heart sing. Tis true that Alice and Wonderland is one of the most bizarre books known to children's literature, however the illustrations that can come from the book are by far typically the most unique.
Don't tell me that visuals such as the mushroom scene fail to knock your socks off. I won't hear of it.

Cupcakes make me entirely too happy. And ones with colored sprinkles? We won't even go there. They most definitely rank high on my list-of-happies in life. My dear friend/former (sob/cry/hiccup) roomie helped me in a pinch to get this shot by being a most superb actress. Though it was my first stop motion video, I'm determined it will not end here. They're much too fun to make! Consequently, these too now rank high on the list. But only after the cupcakes.

I like to call this my "Get out of jail free card."

You might be thinking to yourself:
"Now WHY are there razor blades sticking out of that cherry pie?"

All I can say in my defense is that the idea above was an assignment from a sometimes wacky instructor I had where I studied commercial photography (The Creative Circus). In other words: they made me do it. Assignment? Fear factor. Originally I presented other concepts for possible photograph(s) that involved pastel-colored balloons, sugar, spice and everything nice with a little kick to them, but needless to say, they did not make the cut.

Cherry pies are a little trickier to cut a crisp and clean edge than one might believe, initially at least. Thank goodness for Allison's help and expertise! Eight pies and two reshoots later, came the final shot (above).

Blue blueberries and off-white cream

A blue and white color scheme is very often a go-to of mine. If you were to take a peek into my closest you would find a large collection of navy blues and whites. Old, scalloped European beach umbrellas, linens drying on a clothes line, and Monet paintings instantly come to mind. It's simple, chic combination and forever a classic. Therefore, it is only fitting that blueberries and whipped cream is a favorite visual treat.

The light and airy photograph is a more natural take on blueberries than my previous, which was a rather unusual, conceptual photograph.

Love is Love Farm
a preview into the details:

About 40 minutes from downtown Atlanta is a wee, organic farm where the passion of its owners is written in its very name. Two people who absolutely love what they do.

At this point I've visited the farm twice and have loved all eight hours invested. This is quickly becoming my favorite project of the year. On each visit I tag along, snapping as I please and given every freedom to do so. Joe and Judith are incredible people who devote loads of time and energy into what they do, but as Joe noted, they make sure to take time off to enjoy life outside farming as well. They are foodies, inside and out and every which way. Everything that they do, every item that they use or buy, and the process in which they grow each produce is intentional and done with meaning. I haven't asked about posting pictures of them on here yet, but once I do I'll be sure to post more.

Glitter & Glue

Being the visual person that I am, I tend to pull inspiration from just about anywhere. An antique yellow, wooden box in my living room houses scads of past issues of catalogues and magazines. Among my favorites are Toast, Anthropologie (have you seen the newest?), Garden & Gun, and Donna Hay. Films are a great source as well, especially indies and documentaries. In the movie, The Holiday, there's a scene where the little girls drag Cameron Diaz into their wonderfully styled, magical blanket tent with stars dangling from the ceiling of it. Ever since, sparkly stars have danced in my head, begging to take part in a shoot.

The night prior to this shoot I was covered in pink glitter and modge podge from head to toe. But oh, it was worth it.

Little M is so very sweet and obviously full of smiles. Afterward she treated me to coffee and eggs straight from her Fisher Price kitchen.
